Over Spring Break, some Murray 6th, 7th, and 8th graders visited France. We visited many of the attractions that Paris is known for such as the Eiffel Tower, the Arc de Triomphe, the Louvre, Notre Dame, and Sacré Coeur, as well as the Palace of Versailles. We also spent time at the American cemetery and Omaha Beach learning about D-Day and WWII. We learned much about French history from our visits to the Bayeux Tapestry, Mont St. Michel, Chambord, Chenonceau, and the Cathedral of Chartres. Students were able to use some of their French language skills and definitely learned about the differences and similarities between French and American cultures. Here are some photos from our trip.

Mid-October I took a few days to go to France to run the Paris Marathon. It was my 4th time running a marathon, and while it was nowhere near my personal best, I finished it! 26.2 miles, or 42.19km in the books! While I was in Paris I took the time to enjoy some of my favorite places in the city, and of course, enjoy some delicious French cuisine. Here are some pictures I took while there. Near the starting line of the marathon on the Champs Élysées, around mile 18.5 near the Eiffel Tower, and me with my finisher's medal. L'arc de triomphe, la gratinée à l'oignon (French onion soup), et la crème brûlée. In Montmartre, my favorite neighborhood of Paris, you'll find the Moulin Rouge, Sacre Coeur, and a ton of artists and cafés. Boeuf bourguignon et mousse au chocolat with some dinner entertainment. Last time I was in Paris was when I brought Murray students in 2019. When we were there, Notre Dame Cathedral caught on fire and the roof and spire collapsed. You can see that the rebuilding process is slow-going.
A small group of Murray students visited France over spring break. We spent a few days in Paris and a few in Nice. We were one of the last groups to visit Notre Dame cathedral before the historic fire and saw the glorious beauty of the building before the fire, as well as the broken remains after.
It was a wonderful opportunity for our students to use their language and cross-cultural skills in authentic settings. What a reward after years of studying a language! |
