Dear families,
Mardi Gras is March 1st and that date is fast approaching. Beginning the week of February 14, we will begin learning about the traditions of Mardi Gras. Our culminating celebration will be a parade for the Kindergarten through 4th grade French students in which they will display their parade floats and masks, and hand out beaded necklaces to the other students in the school. To create our floats, I ask that students bring in a shoe or shirt box, and anything else they would like to use to decorate their floats (stickers, wrapping paper, etc.). Now through 2/15: bring in shoe/shirt boxes 2/16-2/25: students will decorate floats and masks while learning about francophone traditions of Mardi Gras Tuesday, March 1st: MARDI GRAS! Wear purple, green, and/or yellow (gold). We’ll be showing off our Mardi Gras creations with the school during our parade. As always, I thank you for your support. If you have any questions, please contact me at [email protected]. Madame Korpalski Dear families, I am happy to welcome students back to school. I would like to communicate with you some news from our French classroom. In the beginning of the school year I sent out a supply list. Students in grades 1-8 should have a folder, a notebook and a pencil which they should bring with them to every class. Please ensure your child has this. Many students still do not have their materials, or they have been misplaced in the last few months. In addition, we use some supplies as a community for different assignments, and we are running low of some of them. If you are able to donate a few things to the class it would be very much appreciated. We need: Pencils Notebook paper Dry-erase markers Glue sticks If you ever need to contact me for any reason, you can email me at [email protected]. Find more resources and information on my website at madamekorpalski.weebly.com. Merci for all your support. Meilleurs vœux pour la nouvelle année, Madame Korpalski Upcoming Events-National French contest
The National French Contest/Le Grand Concours is an annual competition sponsored by the American Association of Teachers of French. Students of French in grades 1-12, in all 50 states and abroad, take a test and compete against students with similar educational background for prizes. Grades 1-6 participate in the FLES Contest. Grades 7-12 in the Secondary Contest. Last time Murray participated in 2020 we had 1 student who placed Bronze (earning a medal and $20 gift card) and 2 students who placed with honorable mention. This year the test will be optional for all French students in grades 1-8. The testing fee is $6. Please submit the permission form and $6 by January 28. Testing dates will be between February 14 and March 30. -Pathways to the Seal of Biliteracy for 5th and 8th graders What is the State Seal of Biliteracy? The State Seal of Biliteracy is a recognition given to high school seniors who have studied and can exhibit the ability to communicate in two or more languages (including English) by their senior year. The Seal is highlighted on the high school diploma and serves as a statement of accomplishment for college admission and future employment. To build on the success of the District’s State Seal of Biliteracy program, the Chicago Public Schools Office of Language and Cultural Education (OLCE) introduced the CPS Seal of Biliteracy Pathway Award for 5th & 8th grade students to be recognized for being on their pathway towards earning the State Seal of Biliteracy through their enrollment in a Bilingual, Dual, and/or World Language program. How will the CPS Seal of Biliteracy be awarded*? At the Elementary & Middle School level, the CPS Seal of Biliteracy Pathway Award will be given to students who take the Avant Assessment; a 2-hour long computer-based test given at their school and paid for by the district and who score: • 5th graders: A minimum score of 2 “Novice Mid” in each of the four language domains through the STAMP 4Se test • 8th graders: A minimum score 4 “Intermediate Low” in each of the four language domains through STAMP 4S Awards: Recipients of the CPS Seal of Biliteracy Award will receive a commemorative medal. Students who receive the Pathways Seal will also have a special lunch provided by Madame Korpalski. 5th and 8th grade students will take the test in their French classes between February 22 - March 4. -Mardi Gras is March 1st From History.com: Mardi is the French word for Tuesday, and gras means “fat.” In France, the day before Ash Wednesday came to be known as Mardi Gras, or “Fat Tuesday.” Traditionally, in the days leading up to Lent, merrymakers would binge on all the rich, fatty foods—meat, eggs, milk, lard and cheese—that remained in their homes, in anticipation of several weeks of eating only fish and different types of fasting. The word carnival, another common name for the pre-Lenten festivities, also derives from this feasting tradition: in Medieval Latin, carnelevarium means to take away or remove meat, from the Latin carnem for meat. In all French classes we will be learning more about the holiday and making masks. Students in grades kindergarten through 3rd will build parade floats (start collecting shoe or shirt boxes, stickers, etc-more information to follow) and show them off to the rest of the school in our Mardi Gras parade on March 1st. Remember to wear your Mardi Gras colors: purple, green, and gold. Keep an eye open for information later this year about… -the PTO World Language Night -Travel abroad opportunities. We are planning a trip to Spain and France for all current 5th-7th students. The trip will be next school year. More information to be released soon. Support the world language department and enjoy a taffy apple during our fall fundraiser. You can order plain caramel, original peanut, or Halloween sprinkles. All apples are $2 each. Give your order forms and money to a world language teacher by Friday, November 19th. Your orders will be delivered Tuesday, November 30th.
Back to School LetterDear students, parents, and guardians, Bonne rentrée! Happy back-to-school! Students, I’ve been thinking about you a lot and am excited to see you back in the classroom. Things may be a little different still, but I look forward to seeing you in person. Parents, Murray’s world language back to school night will be held virtually this year on September 22. Meet our language teachers, learn about Murray’s language program, and ask questions. Required individual supplies for French class:
Thank you and I look forward to another great year together. Madame Korpalski Class Rules and ExpectationsClass Rules
Folder Notebook (keep using your notebook from last year if you have it) Writing utensils (pen or pencil) Headphones are helpful, but not required as we have some available in the classroom Grading Categories & Weights Grading Scale Reading 20% A 90-100% consistently exceeding standards Listening 20% B 80-89% Speaking 25% C 70-79% meeting the standard Writing 25% D 60-69% Culture 10% F 0-59% not meeting the standard Late work and retakes: French homework will be assigned from 2nd-8th grade, but will not necessarily be assigned each class period. I highly recommend that students practice French each day at home, whether or not they have homework. Students may NOT use Google translate or any similar translators for their classwork or homework, as these tools do not demonstrate the language the student can produce on his/her own. It is expected that students meet all assignment deadlines, for both in- and out-of-class work. It is essential for students to turn in their work on time, as each assignment builds on the other. French classes will follow Murray’s policy for late work. Late work will be accepted based on the following scale: 1 class period late: a 10% deduction from scored work 2 class periods late: a 20% deduction from scored work 3 class periods late: a 30% deduction from scored work 4 class periods late: a 40% deduction from scored work After this time, late work will not be accepted for a grade. Retakes: If a student fails an assessment, s/he may make up the test by appointment. The student must fill out the retest contract (available on my website) which includes a reflection and study plan. The contract must also be signed by a parent or guardian. There is a zero-tolerance policy for cheating, per the Chicago Public Schools Code of Conduct (code 3-8). If a student is caught cheating, s/he will receive a zero on the assignment/test and a discipline report will be written up and filed with Murray administration. A retake will not be available in cases of cheating. Club Lac du BoisVirtual Village Clubs offer a variety of culturally authentic activities, taught in the target language, for villagers ages 8-18. I suggest writing out a weekly schedule of all your student's classes so everyone can keep track of when classes are. Blank templates are available if you search in Google.
Many of you were not in class for the listening activity we did May 19-20. If you already submitted your answers to me, you can disregard this message. However, if you missed the activity, watch the video below. I say 5 sentences in French. You should tell me the animals and how I describe them (the adjective like color or size) in ENGLISH. You can submit your answers to me through email, ClassDojo, or the Google classroom.
Below you will find our presentation for the week. We are currently reviewing fruits and we should be able to say what we like or don't like, and describing quantity and color of fruits.
