Dear families, I am happy to welcome students back to school. I would like to communicate with you some news from our French classroom. In the beginning of the school year I sent out a supply list. Students in grades 1-8 should have a folder, a notebook and a pencil which they should bring with them to every class. Please ensure your child has this. Many students still do not have their materials, or they have been misplaced in the last few months. In addition, we use some supplies as a community for different assignments, and we are running low of some of them. If you are able to donate a few things to the class it would be very much appreciated. We need: Pencils Notebook paper Dry-erase markers Glue sticks If you ever need to contact me for any reason, you can email me at [email protected]. Find more resources and information on my website at madamekorpalski.weebly.com. Merci for all your support. Meilleurs vœux pour la nouvelle année, Madame Korpalski Upcoming Events-National French contest
The National French Contest/Le Grand Concours is an annual competition sponsored by the American Association of Teachers of French. Students of French in grades 1-12, in all 50 states and abroad, take a test and compete against students with similar educational background for prizes. Grades 1-6 participate in the FLES Contest. Grades 7-12 in the Secondary Contest. Last time Murray participated in 2020 we had 1 student who placed Bronze (earning a medal and $20 gift card) and 2 students who placed with honorable mention. This year the test will be optional for all French students in grades 1-8. The testing fee is $6. Please submit the permission form and $6 by January 28. Testing dates will be between February 14 and March 30. -Pathways to the Seal of Biliteracy for 5th and 8th graders What is the State Seal of Biliteracy? The State Seal of Biliteracy is a recognition given to high school seniors who have studied and can exhibit the ability to communicate in two or more languages (including English) by their senior year. The Seal is highlighted on the high school diploma and serves as a statement of accomplishment for college admission and future employment. To build on the success of the District’s State Seal of Biliteracy program, the Chicago Public Schools Office of Language and Cultural Education (OLCE) introduced the CPS Seal of Biliteracy Pathway Award for 5th & 8th grade students to be recognized for being on their pathway towards earning the State Seal of Biliteracy through their enrollment in a Bilingual, Dual, and/or World Language program. How will the CPS Seal of Biliteracy be awarded*? At the Elementary & Middle School level, the CPS Seal of Biliteracy Pathway Award will be given to students who take the Avant Assessment; a 2-hour long computer-based test given at their school and paid for by the district and who score: • 5th graders: A minimum score of 2 “Novice Mid” in each of the four language domains through the STAMP 4Se test • 8th graders: A minimum score 4 “Intermediate Low” in each of the four language domains through STAMP 4S Awards: Recipients of the CPS Seal of Biliteracy Award will receive a commemorative medal. Students who receive the Pathways Seal will also have a special lunch provided by Madame Korpalski. 5th and 8th grade students will take the test in their French classes between February 22 - March 4. -Mardi Gras is March 1st From History.com: Mardi is the French word for Tuesday, and gras means “fat.” In France, the day before Ash Wednesday came to be known as Mardi Gras, or “Fat Tuesday.” Traditionally, in the days leading up to Lent, merrymakers would binge on all the rich, fatty foods—meat, eggs, milk, lard and cheese—that remained in their homes, in anticipation of several weeks of eating only fish and different types of fasting. The word carnival, another common name for the pre-Lenten festivities, also derives from this feasting tradition: in Medieval Latin, carnelevarium means to take away or remove meat, from the Latin carnem for meat. In all French classes we will be learning more about the holiday and making masks. Students in grades kindergarten through 3rd will build parade floats (start collecting shoe or shirt boxes, stickers, etc-more information to follow) and show them off to the rest of the school in our Mardi Gras parade on March 1st. Remember to wear your Mardi Gras colors: purple, green, and gold. Keep an eye open for information later this year about… -the PTO World Language Night -Travel abroad opportunities. We are planning a trip to Spain and France for all current 5th-7th students. The trip will be next school year. More information to be released soon.
